Each fossil is unique in size and shape.
These specimens of Knightia, a herring-like fish, are found in the Green River area of Wyoming.
They flourished about 55 million years ago when this region had a subtropical climate. The fish perished when the inland seas they inhabited suddenly dried up due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
