Vesuvianite often occurs as a massive aggregate, but has a fibrous texture. Its name comes from the Vesuvius volcano in Italy.

The color varies between green, brown, yellow, red and blue. Given the wide variety of colors, it can be easy to confuse it with other stone. It is often used as a gemstone in jewelry and its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale.
