Frequently Asked Questions – Crystal Prospector's Économusée

What is the Crystal Prospector's Économusée?

This interpretive center showcases quartz crystal, the regional stone, through a private collection of over 100 specimens. Visitors will discover extraction methods, crystallization processes, and the different varieties of crystals, in addition to an exhibition of fluorescent stones and minerals from around the world.

What is an Économusée?

An Économusée® is a craft business (arts and crafts or food processing) that opens its doors to the public to showcase authentic skills. Visitors meet the artisan in their workshop, learn about their craft and passion, and can even take home products made on-site. It's also a way to promote local culture and preserve heritage. Participating businesses are selected for the quality and authenticity of their products. At Cristal du Lac, the Économusée du Prospecteur Cristallier (Crystal Prospector's Économusée) invites you to discover the craft of crystal prospecting and the working of regional quartz crystal.

Where is the Économusée?

Only available at the Métabetchouan–Lac-à-la-Croix Mineral Activity Centre (1840, route 169). It is not offered at our Jonquière store.

What are the tour options?

Two options: a self-guided tour (at your own pace) or a guided tour (accompanied, to learn more about quartz crystal, its history, and its transformation). Both include the Économusée, the fluorescent stone exhibit, and minerals from around the world.

How much does the visit cost?

Self-guided tour: $8 per person. Guided tour: $15 per adult, $8 for children 6-12, free for children 0-5.

Do we need to book in advance?

No, no reservation is required, neither for the self-guided tour nor for the guided tour.

What time do the guided tours take place?

Guided tours take place at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm, and last approximately 40 minutes.

What are the opening dates in 2026?

Self-guided visits are offered from Thursday to Sunday starting April 17th, then 7 days a week from May 28th. Guided tours begin on June 27th.

Is the visit suitable for families?

  • Hello to all of you. My guests and I visited your mine and the museum with great interest. Your team delivers the history of your project in a remarkable way. We had a very warm welcome. The guides know their subject very well. Thank you Rémi for introducing us to this passion that you have had for over 40 years. A beautiful day for me and my grandchildren. Once again, thank you very much, Alain, Dominique, Jérôme and Laurence. Well done

  • The best activity my daughter and I did at Lac St Jean! The site is magnificent. The guide we had (I don't remember her name) was really interesting, we felt that she was passionate and that she wanted to teach us!! The other guide too, we felt her passion! They helped us and explained how to find crystals.. We feel that for them it is not just a job but really a passion!! And what can I say about Mr. Rémi, super nice, welcoming, proud of his mine.. Probably the only activity I would do again if I return to the Lake!! Really a great experience.. Thank you!!!!
